Anyone can agree that new is always better!
Well, I decided it was time for my blog to get some pampering and with that came a whole new look. Comment below with a thumbs up or thumbs down and let me know how you feel about this new and improved look!

/Smoke free = 5K/

Monday, March 30, 2015

On February 28th, I made the hard decision to quit smoking.
Two days ago, I celebrated my ONE month of being SMOKE FREE, and it feels amazing!

This accomplishment has made me realize that I am much stronger than I give myself credit for, and that I can do anything I set my mind to!

To reward myself for this major milestone, I am going to do what I've been dreaming about since I first made the decision to stop smoking, I am going to run a 5K!

I know it's not that far, or hard, but to a smoker of 10 years, the idea of running for more that five minutes is like asking a fish to breathe without water.

I am scared, but  thankful that I was athletic for most of my teenage years.  All those 5 am morning workouts for water polo, and 2 hour beach runs for volleyball sure paid off for something!

I am really counting on my muscle memory to help a sis-ta out!

I am going to post weekly about my progress and will call it Fitness Friday!

I need all the support I can get on this one, and hopefully I feel inspired to one day do a 10K or even a whole marathon.....but baby steps first!

Here is my GYM SCHEDULE for the first week!

Here goes nothing...

/Inspiration + Weekend/

Friday, March 27, 2015

This week has been especially hard for me. I've spent the last two weeks on the road and trying to get back into the swing of things at my other job has been more than draining. It's daylight savings time and jet lag all rolled into one for this girl!
So, I needed some inspiration to help me get through this weekend and get ready for Monday morning.

Here are my FOUR Favorite inspirational quotes PLUS a bonus one to prepare myself for the weekend!

Is anyone else hot?
Here in California it has ranged from 80-90 degrees for the last week or so. Um did mother nature forget that it was March and just cruise right into July? Never the less, I do have to say that because of the heat during the day, it is magical at night. It is the perfect temperature to drive with the windows down and just start that bonfire obsession early!
/We truly are blessed in the West/
For those on the East Coast or in the Midwest, the sting of winter is still in the air, but here in California, it's bathing suit time!

Chicago's real nickname shouldn't be Chi Town....but Chow Town or maybe The Land of Gorge.
I say this because the amount of tantalizing restaurants this city has to offer should be illegal.
Here is my Top 3 favorite restaurants in the windy city:

Number 1.
La Cantina in the Italian Village

We decided to check out the Italian Village which is located at 71 W. Monroe St, Chicago, IL 60603. Go there!
It's a great escape from the busy streets of Chicago. You have a choice between three different restaurants all located in this one area. We chose to eat at La Cantina.
Delicious + Cozy are the two words that come to my mind when I think about this place.
I ordered the lasagna, and was more than blown away when it came to the table. The best part of lasagna, in my opinion, is the cheese that is baked on top.
Well, they obviously feel the same way.

Number 2.
This is the food child of Bill and Giuliana Rancic, Doug Psaltis, and Lettuce Entertain You.
One of the hardest places to get in to. If you get a reservation here, consider it a golden ticket. My good friend, Adam Leebow, some how got us a table and let me tell you, it is everything I thought it would be!

I feel like I need to say something about the Happy Birthday cotton candy dish. I went to the bathroom and when I arrived back at the table, I was serenaded with the " Happy Birthday" song. I immediately was taken back and blushing, not because I was embarrassed by this, but because my birthday isn't until August. I guess Dave (the guy on the far right) saw them on other guest's tables and during my leave of absence told the waiter it was my birthday.
Talk about a night to remember.

Number 3.
Fig & Olive

1. Taken by me
2: Taken by Fig & Olive

I was invited by the president of Olivia Garden and my boss to eat here for our last night in Chicago. What a wonderful way to wrap up the show.
The first dish we ordered was the CHEESE assortment with Fig Jam, Marcona Almond & Toast Fromage de Chèvre, Gorgonzola Dolce, Robiola , Manchego, Rocchetta .
Absolutely amazing!
The waitress recommend the CHILEAN SEA BASS for my main dish which was marinated with lemon + thyme. It comes with carrot, asparagus, celery root purée, heirloom potato, charmoula mascarpone harissa olive oil emulsion. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Chicago....you really get the saying...
a way to a woman's heart is through her stomach.
Right?

The Windy City, The Second City, or Chi Town. Whichever name you want to call it, Chicago is one of my favorite places to visit in the good 'ol U.S of A. It's like no other city I've ever been to.

Last year, I got the opportunity to work at the American Beauty Show 2014
I had such an amazing time, I just have to share a few of my favorite moments with you.

One place you have to go while you're there is Three Dots and a  Dash!
Not a lot of people know about this gem which makes it so unique. One of my friends from Chicago told me that we were going to a fun bar and that I just needed to trust her. I laughed as she looked at me with all seriousness. With that, I agreed and we began our journey to the most interesting bar I have ever been to.
You walk down a random alleyway to be met by a row of tiki torches guiding the way to a secret door. When you enter the bar, you are greeted with a wall full of skulls hanging above the steps leading you down to the sitting area. It is full of lush greenery!
You are transported to Hawaii Cira 1940's, and it's a warm 78 degrees inside.
It is simply magical!
Here are some pictures from last year.

Also, a great place to get real Chicago style deep dish pizza is from Lou Malnati's
Here I am last year. Can't you see the excitement on my face!

Look at this delicious slice of authentic Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza!!!

Things I am looking forward to for this trip to Chicago!
Bar + Food
1. Have a drink at The Signature Lounge .
It is located on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Center Building. The views must be amazing.
2. Eating at GT Fish. It's a little pricey but totally worth it!
3. Get a delicious doughnut at The Doughnut Vault

Parks + Monument
1. Visit the Bean/Cloud Gate!
2. The Navy Pier!
3. The Willis Tower!

Let's take this city by storm!

/Cigs + Coffee/

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

I was a smoker for 10 years. I loved it! I loved the image of smokers, the relaxing puffs while sipping my morning coffee, how I could get out of any situations because I "needed to have one".
Well, that time has come and gone.
As I am closing in on my thirties I have realized that my party days are over. I don't need to tell you how gross cigarettes are and  I've been dreaming of the woman I would be when I quit; Athletic is the word that always came to my mind. More specifically, running. I told myself I would run all the time when I quit.

Well, this Friday will be a month of being smoke-free. I am so happy to close this chapter of my life.
The idea of writing this post is because I've gone through a lot these last four weeks and hope I can be the voice of reason or a helping hand if you're trying to quit or have thought about quitting.

Here are the 5 things I've learned while putting out the cig for good.

1. TIME HEALS ALL!
I have been told that it will take time for me to feel like myself again. I've lost my best friend, my other half, the thing that has been with me for almost half my life.
In the beginning of the month I was very optimistic about quitting. I would handle my cravings like a champ by holding a pencil, chewing gum, or going for a walk. Well, that all change after the second week. I knew that there were other withdraw symptoms besides irritability and mood swings.  I had no idea that anxiety was one of the withdraw symptoms. But it's true, by the second week I started getting anxious, not wanting to go anywhere (which is very unlike me), and cried all the time. I had to ask myself "What is wrong with me?"
If this is happening to you ; DON'T WORRY, IT IS TOTALLY NORMAL!
By the second week your body is still trying to figure out how to calm itself down.  You no longer have a crutch to hold onto in a stressful moment  and are now working through them organically.
 IT WILL PASS!
I can tell you that my anxiety has lessened tremendously in the last week and it only get's easier.

2. FIND A HOBBY!
I'm telling the truth when I say I've actually Googled different hobbies because I didn't know how to have one. I loved to work but knew that it couldn't be my hobby. So I thought about things that made me happy. I loved cooking, and watching movies, and organizing. Well, boom. there are three hobbies right there! What I am saying that during this tough time, find things that make you happy and do them everyday!

3. START A JOURNAL
It's really exciting to look back to my first days of not smoking and see how far along I've come. It gives me the motivation I need to keep going. I keep my journal on my side table and before bed I write down my goals, dreams, sketches, and amazing occurrences of the day. If you don't have a journal/ diary.....buy one!
 Its free therapy!

4. FIND SUPPORT
I can not stress this point the most!! Either through a professional website like http://www.nobutts.org/ or find a therapist who will help you through the hard moments and will cheer you on during your victories. You've heard that quitting smoking is harder that heroin. HEROIN!!!! People go to rehab for that! Meanwhile you are still suppose to go along like everything is fine in your everyday life. You're doing great! How I think about it is when you seek wise counsel, you in turn become wise. Find someone to talk to about any struggles you might be having with quitting. It will make you stronger in the end, I promise you.

5. BREATHE!
I read this poem the other day that I want to share with you. I helped me out so much thus far and hope it helps you to:

Breathe
whatever you are doing right now.
take a deep breath, than another.
you are so beautiful.
has anyone told you that lately?
and there's something more important.
you're strong.
sometimes it feels like you're not.
maybe even most the time.
but please don't ever forget.
you're stronger than you know.
everyday, you wake up, no matter what, no matter what you've gone through
you wake up in the morning, take a second and appreciate that, after all these
years, you still have hope.
maybe it's buried inside you.
maybe that sounds ridiculous.
but you keep going every goddamn day.
and that makes you incredible
but breath today, breath right now
sometimes things are too much
and I want you to know that's okay
there will be times when you want to break down and cry, sometimes when you want to fall asleep
and never ever wake up again
that doesn't make you weak
it makes you human
and that's beautiful, too
after all that you've been through, you can still feel
never underestimate that
because you know what that means?
there's hope
It means that you'll feel love and happiness, it means you'll feel pride and joy
It means you're still alive, but more than that, it means you're still living
Stay strong
Stay beautiful
never stop feeling
and sometimes all you need to do it Breath!

/Bagels + Coffee: NY edition/

A toasted cinnamon raisin bagel, thick cream cheese and a caramel macchiato.
That, my friend, is my perfect breakfast. I almost wish it was 6 AM again, and that is saying something!
For the last day of the IBS New York International Hair Show we decided it was time to enjoy something New York does best: bagels.
We owed ourselves for working so hard those last 4 days.
I'm talking 14+ hours a day! I earned those carbs!
Caffe Bene has chains all around the nation but started in South Korea in 2008. They are primarily based in Los Angeles and New York. So if you're ever craving a delicious Bagel + Coffee, stop on in and enjoy their warm and inviting environment!
It's almost like you never left your own living room.

/Day one in the Big Apple/

Sunday, March 15, 2015

There is no place like New York City. The lights, energy, and constant hustle of the working woman  makes this city a very special place to me. I was so excited to attend the IBS New York International Hair Convention and was thinking of writing this post about what I do, who I work with and so forth. Then I realized that I'd much rather talk about the amazing food  I experienced in this city.
If you had your hopes up about seeing a sneak peek into my work life,  don't worry, it will come up in another post, but for right now let's indulge together, shall we?

Have you seen the movie "Chef"?  If so,  you've experienced what I experienced, Euphoria!  Watching him make the best looking Cuban sandwiches was the cherry on top of all the amazing food we got to witness him create. If you have not seen that movie, stop reading this, go to Netflix, watch it, then come back to me and we can talk!

Ever since that movie, I've craved one of these bad boys and finally got to have my first one, EVER.
I was so excited to eat at Havana Central!

It's located on 151 W. 46th St, New York, NY 10036.  It was perfect because we were staying around the corner at the Crown Plaza Time Square.

The minute you walk in you feel like your in little Havana in Miami, FL.

We got to sit on the top balcony overlooking the downstairs sitting area. It was beautiful. It made me want to put on a salsa skirt and heels!
When the waiter came over, I was so excited, I think I shouted, " THE CUBAN SANDWICH..."
Best decision of my life.
Look at it in all it's glory.

The pork was tender and juicy, the bread was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, the pickle was heated just enough. This was a mess that I did not mind!
I was in heaven!

If you are in New York, you have to try this place!
Make reservations though, it tends to book quickly.

For those who love to cook, make your own Cuban Sandwich at home with this FREE Cuban Sandwich Recipe!

Day one in the Big Apple was a success!
More un-messing to come.

/FREEBIE PACKING LIST/

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

As my trip to New York gets closer, I am looking over my packing lit and making sure I got rid of any "Did I's".  I have put together a FREEBIE for you to help with the messy packing details. I know I'm the type of traveler that will forget her shoes if she hasn't looked over her list or has written it down.

Here is my helpful

/The first mess of many/

Monday, March 2, 2015

Traveling can get a little messy. Trying to figure out what to bring, the weather, making sure you're at the airport on time, and let’s not forget the wonderful TSA line with the wonderful "no shoes" policy, you can almost ask yourself...why am I doing this again?

It's because traveling actually doesn't have to be that messy. I first started to travel a lot as a messy teenager and even more in my  twenties.
I was the girl who got onto the plane with her pillow...no not a traveler's pillow, my actual pillow..(What? I wanted to be comfortable)...two different kinds of drinks from Starbucks, a coffee and chamomile tea,
(I couldn't make up my mind if I wanted to work or relax), plus my purse and a backpack.
Let me tell you, every single "non-messy" traveler gave me the look of  ..."oh dear, that poor girl, this must be her first time flying".

Looking back, I give myself that same look. What was I thinking?
Now I feel like I have my traveling needs down to a science. I pride myself on knowing the tricks of the trade and am proud to share them with you. I am leaving in a week to attend the IBS New York Hair and Beauty Show and am so excited I almost want to get packing. Going to New York can be a little messy this time of year. It's not the dead of winter, but it isn't spring time by any means. Flights can be delayed or re-routed, and getting a taxi from the airport into the city can be a nightmare. But....no fear...This. Mess. Can. Be. Fixed.

First, let's get rid of the dreadful "Did I's"... what are they you ask? Well they sound a little something like this...
Did I... make sure I packed my razor?
Did I...bring that sweater that I was contemplating?
Did I...bring enough warm clothes?
(Hopefully, I'm not the only one who feels this way).

I started using the app Listastic (available in the apps story for FREE).
I begin by making a list of all the days I will be gone. It looks something like this...

For this trip I will be gone:
Friday   Saturday   Sunday   Monday   Tuesday   Wednesday.
Once my days are written out, I color coordinate them.
Friday   Saturday   Sunday   Monday   Tuesday   Wednesday.
Then I list what I will be doing on those days so I'll know what to pack.
For example:
Friday: Airport Day     Saturday: Setup Day
-Cargo pants                  Yoga Pants
-Loose White Top         Loose Top
-Jean Jacket                  Running Shoes
-Sandals                        NIGHT TIME
                                       Black Pants
                                       Top
                                       Jean Jacket
.....and so forth

See how easy it can be!
Let’s not forget that after I am done packing (which I do the day before) I immediately go to my phone and check in. This has been  God's gift to frequent flyers! Now I can rest peacefully knowing that I am all ready for the airport!
Well I hope this has helped you get to know me a little bit more, as well as cut down on the mess of packing.
More un-messing coming soon
