Renew Reuse

Not everyone is into second-hand anything. I get it. We live in a world full of new.

New iPhone, new trend, new album, new new new.

I am the kind of person though, that loves old. Give me back the 90's, please. Or better yet, take me back to the late 70's. I've heard stories from my parents, and trust me we missed out!

I have been in a funk lately where I have been caught up in my job(s) and school and overseeing my news production for our school's newspaper and being the vice president of multiple clubs....you get it, I'm B.U.S.Y!

So when I was walking my two adorable pups and stumbled upon these two delicious cabinets, I immediately got the goosebumps. My boyfriend and I have been needing new nightstands for as long as I can remember but haven't found anything that we liked. (Perks of dating someone who also loves antiquing). It's a process to find the perfect item you're looking for. Anyways I am done using an IKEA crate and him using our dog's kennel as nightstands. It was time to grow up.

So in Kalie fashion, I wanted to take old and make it new.

I had a lot of help with this project and made it into something I wanted. So, unfortunately, I don't have the exact dimensions or step by step directions for this project.
The purpose of this post is to hopefully inspire you to take something and make it into something new.

First thing first. I went to my neighbor who is a carpenter and told  begged him to create these beautiful cabinets into nightstands. I needed the bottom of the cabinets to be shorter and I wanted Devin's side to have a floating shelf and mine to have two shelves.

Here is the THE PROCESS and the AFTER pictures.

 DRUM ROLL PLEASE

The space in the boxes are a great place to have personal items such as Devin's  love for star war trinkets such as these Bobble Heads and his Economist magazines. He found the three picture frames at a antique mall and didn't have a place to showcase them.

For me, the space allowed my inner minimalist to come out. I have color pencils in a metal pail in scallop from Target ($1 aisle),  a stress free color book from Saks Ffth Avenue, a print of Los Angeles from Society 6, and a scenting holder.

It truly became exactly what we wanted!
Also, the bottoms have a big enough opening that our dogs have their own little dens.

BONUS!!

5 days in the Capital!

Tuesday, June 27, 2017

When I was given the assignment to go to the Fashion-Focus Hair Show in Washington D.C., brought to you by Cosmoprof and Armstrong McCall , all I could think about was my favorite show of all time... VEEP! And when I began packing, I could only contemplate, "What in the world would Gary pack for Selina Meyers?"
I only had 5 days to really take in the city, so what should a girl bring?

I knew that I was going to Washington D. C. at the beginning of March, and the east coast is known for its crazy weather.  It was going to be practically freezing for the duration of my trip.  So the essentials were:

Goose Down Coat

Scarfs

Thigh High Boots

and BIG comfy sweater shirts.

I have used the same packing list for two years, and it has help me to never forget the essentials!
You can find it here --->Packing List Blog Post for a free printable checklist

Now that the packing is over...let's go!

I had the night free to explore, and found this amazingly delicious sushi place near my hotel which was right next to the new MGM!

...and yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, those are real tuna and salmon sandwiches with rice as the bun...
O*M*G I need to have Devin make these....or maybe try a sushi making class...hmmm?

Next day was set up for the Olivia Garden booth, and it was amazing.

We are celebrating 50 years, and I truly feel so blessed to be the Lead Travel Rep for them. Isn't our booth amazing! The stream lines, the organization, the attention to detail makes this Type A girl feel all warm and fuzzy!

Next stop was to see some of our nation's monuments!

The Smithsonian Art Museum was by far my favorite!

Next stop...getting a street hot dog from a dirty water vendor! I had been looking forward to this moment since as long as I can remember. I always have tried to get one in New York or Chicago, because- HELLO - they are famous for them, but I never get out of the show in time. They are usually packed up. Well I finally got one!

It was GLORIOUS!!!! Relish, Ketchup, and Mustard. Simple and Satisfying.

Then it was off like a curious tourist, and I went to some monuments first.

What a trip! It was a quick 5 days, and most of it was work, but let me tell you, it was a perfect!

So, let me finish up by saying, if you have only one day in Washington D.C., it is possible to see all the monuments, eat a delicious street dog and make some memories you will cherish forever!
Til next time.

Southern Comfort // Nashville Style

Friday, May 19, 2017

I have a few keywords to try out on you:
  • Goo Goo
  • Tacos
  • Bourbon
  • Hot Chicken
  • Fried Eggs
These are just a few wonderful, delicious, savory items that Nashville has to offer.
I am a fool when it comes to tacos, so it was no surprise to me my friend Adam decided to go to Bakersfield Tacos, in the heart of downtown, to splurge on some authentic southern tacos. I indulged in the pork belly tacos and the carne asada tacos. We doubled up on Margaritas and a shot of the Desert Rose Bourbon that was on special that night.
The ambiance is homey and comforting

After we were full to our heart content, we decided to explore Broadway street which is almost exactly like Austins dirty 6th street. Which you can read about in my blog post for AUSTIN, TX !

A wonderful southern downpour decided to happen right as we were leaving the bar. This photo best captions how I felt about that.

We'll just leave it at we had a great night!

The next day was Show Day and man does our new booth look amazing!

But nothing tops Nashvilles Hot Chicken. When my girlfriend Lauren brought this up for dinner, I didn't understand what she was talking about. I thought it was a type of fried chicken. Call it ignorance, but I didn't know that there was a spicy chicken called Hot Chicken.

IT'S DELICIOUS!!!
We ventured to a local favorite called Whiskey Kitchen...

After out delicious meal we again hit up Broadway street and went to Roberts Western World, which you can listen to the next big legend.

And of course follow all my fun adventures on Snapchat: iamkalie!!

On to the next adventure... Seattle!!!

New York I love you but you're bringing me down

Monday, March 27, 2017

As the famous band, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM, said, " New York I love you...but you're bringing me down!" If you've never heard this song, first of all I'm sorry you've been deprived, secondly get it together and listen to it HERE. This is so appropriate because a few weeks back I was in New York for the lovely Winter Storm Stella.
Let me tell you a funny story:
Monday night before the storm: Half of New York is going about business as usual, the other half is thinking the apocalypse is about to begin.
Me and my Boss are going to dinner and she asks me to find a great place.
My first reaction is to call the Spotted Pig because it's delicious, and because my boyfriend used to be the Sous Chef! (hello..could I be any luckier than having a chef for a boyfriend #neverhungry)
The hostess tells me its and hour and a half wait if I was standing in front of her at that moment..no reservations!
I said, no thanks, I'm starving and I continue my yelp indulgence and come across a restaurant that is close and equally appealing.
I ring them up
Bring Bring
Owner: Hello?? ( in a way that sounded like he was being held at gun point)
Me: Hello..?... is this a resturant
Owner: Yes (same tone)
Me: Okayyy I would like to make a reservation for two
Owner: Oh I'm so sorry but we are closing early due to the impending doom
Me: Oh umm ok..thanks...

I then looked at my boss and said these exact words, " I don't think we are taking this as seriously as we should...I think we need to stock up on water!"
Mind you, we are staying at the Crown Plaza in Time Square, which remained open during Hurricane Sandy.
Needless to say, We survive, I went to the Playwright bar on 46th street with a co-worker and drank into the storm, and now have a funny story to tell about that one time I was in New York for Winter Storm Stella.

LET'S TALK ABOUT A FEW THINGS:
THE IBS HAIR SHOW AND FOOD!

IBS hosted it 100th anniversary at the Jacob Javits Convention Center! They're already preparing for next year! Get your info HERE!

and we are celebrating our 50th anniversary so of course we have our 50th Anniversary Collection, equipped with our paddle mixed boar bristle

We wouldn't be able to do anything without our amazing team!

NOW FOR THE FOOD!
MY TOP THREE PLACES TO EAT AT!

I don't only go for the amazing hair show,  I also have a love for food! Who doesn't.
Here are my top three places to eat affordably, but still feel glamorous in the Big Apple

NUMBER ONE: Havanna Central// We literally go here, every year, for our first meal! The sangria is on point and their cuban sandwiches make me feel like I'm in the movie Chef.
I said it once, I'll say it again....GO HERE

NUMBER TWO: Little Italy// for the best pizza you've ever eaten!
I've never been to Little Italy before, and wasn't sure what I was going to see.
Was it going to be like the movie, Moonstruck, or the Sopranos? It was more like Moonstruck and made me hungry for pizza, pasta, cannolis!

and finally for dessert...

NUMBER THREE: Sweet Revenge// in Greenwich Village

This quant little shop is bursting with love and deliciousness! I was invited here years ago when a girlfriend read an article about the owner. The story goes, after a nasty divorce, and her losing everything, she started baking and as revenge for her husband wrongfully taking everything...she opened up a small little bakery and named it Sweet Revenge. The best part is, it's famous and gets national press! Jokes on him! This woman is a rock star and her cupcakes prove it!

Look at this delicious revenge cupcake

Well there is much more, but it will have to wait for another post.
Love ya,
Kalie
